Participation Information
If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to complete a series of four steps
estimated to take 2 hours in total, with the longest single step taking 40 minutes to
complete. A sub-group of up to 12 interested participants would also be recruited for optional
follow-up interviews estimated to take 1-1.5 hours in March or April 2008.
For information about how mindfulness and leadership are defined in the study, please read the
Frequently Asked Questions.
For information about the actual criteria for participation, please click
here.
Step 1: Participation Questionnaire - 10 minutes
The first step is to fill out a questionnaire providing some basic information about
yourself, your leadership experience, and your mindfulness practice as applicable. This
questionnaire takes 10 minutes to complete, and can be accessed by clicking
the link on the left sidebar.
Step 2: Consent to Participate, Confidentiality, and Withdrawing from the Study -
10 minutes
If your experience meets the
criteria for the study,
I will ask you to read
and sign a consent form. This form provides detailed information about the study,
and the steps that will be taken to insure your privacy and the confidentiality of your
results. You will
have the option of withdrawing from the study at any point, upon your request, with no
questions asked.
Step 3: Completion of 3 Assessment Instruments - 35 minutes, 15 minutes, and 10 minutes
respectively
Next I will provide you with 3 standard assessment instruments that you will be asked to fill
out. Each instrument can be filled out at separate times if preferred.
- The first instrument provides a general description of normal personality traits
relevant for education and educational research and takes about 35 minutes to complete. It asks
you to answer questions based on your self-assessed behaviors (versus your preferences, for
those familiar with the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator). It is available only in a paper-and-pencil
version.
- The second instrument asks you to describe your normal emotion-related behaviors
for managing yourself and your relationships with others and takes 15 minutes to complete.
This instrument is available only in an on-line version.
- The third instrument provides a description of five types of mindful behavior
and is designed for individuals with and without an explicit mindfulness practice.
It takes 10 minutes to complete and is available on-line.
Step 4: Informational Questionnaire - 40 minutes
The final step is to complete a questionnaire I have designed to collect some additional
information and to provide the opportunity for you to describe your leadership and mindfulness
experiences in your own words. This questionnaire will be available on-line
after you have completed the three instruments above.
Optional Follow-up Interviews - 1-1.5 hours
When you complete the questionnaire in Step 4, you will be asked whether you are willing to
be contacted for an interview about your leadership and/or mindfulness experiences. This
interview is estimated to take approximately 1-1.5 hours. From those who indicate a
willingness to be interviewed, up to 12 will be selected for follow-up interviews to be held
in March or April 2008. Interviews will also be conducted with strict confidentiality,
as described in the agreement to participate.
